2010 National Explorer Conference

Picture
ATLANTA, GEORGIA - In July, we completed our trip to Atlanta, GA for the 2010 Nationals.  Brandon Zusy, Jason Onken, Chance Duenkel, Danielle Christl, Tyler Krueger and Michael Kolbach all attended the event and each one of them learned a great deal in the process.  This is a great learning experience for these future law enforcement professionals.

Brandon, Jason and Chance competed in Emergency Field First Aid and Burglary in Progress.  Danielle, Tyler and Michael competed in Traffic Stops and Crime Scene.  While our teams did not win any trophies in the team competitions, Jason Onken did have the highest written examination score, out of several hundred explorers who took the test.  Jason received a custom coin from the US Park Service for his efforts.

The explorers also participated in events such as the Team Drill Competition, Air Pistol Competition, Police Biking Competition, Volleyball and the Non-emergency Vehicle Operations Course.

While in Atlanta, we took advantage of using the MARTA system to get around.  During our extra time, we took in Altanta sites including Varsity, the World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium, Underground Atlanta, and the Georgia State Capital.

The Explorer Post was able to off set the cost of the trip, so that it cost each Explorer approximately $225 to attend.  The was made possible through donations from the supporters listed below as well as fund-raising activities such as our t-shirt sale.  Please continue to support those businesses who support us.

While at the conference, it was announced that the 2012 National Conference would once again be held at Colorado State University.  If you could not make it this year, mark your calendars for 2012.  Our goal is to take 12 explorers to the 2012 conference.

2008 National Explorer Conference

Picture
FORT COLLINS, COLORADO – The West Bend Police Department Explorer Post #9911, joined more than 3,000 other Explorers, adult leaders and staff from throughout the nation at the 16th Biennial National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference during the week of July 21 – 26, 2008 at Colorado State University.  The purpose of the conference was to provide a training experience for Law Enforcement Explorers and to continue the development of skills required in the law enforcement profession.

Detective Mike Hartwell and Officer Matt Rohlinger led a group of eight young men to the conference.  The Post held various fundraisers prior to the conference, including parking cars at the 2007 US Senior Open, FlowerPower and several brat frys.

Exploring offers young people ages 14 through 20 an opportunity to learn about special interests and vocational choices in association with business and community organizations.  Founded in 1973, Law Enforcement Exploring is a program for youth who are interested in the field of law enforcement.  Nearly 50,000 young people belong to over 3,000 Exploring Posts that are sponsored by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

The conference featured competitions sponsored by the nation’s top law enforcement organizations, providing realistic and practical experiences to prepare Explorers for the types of situations they would have to face in law enforcement careers.  Team events included Bomb Threat Response; Traffic Accident Investigation; Shoot/Don’t Shoot; Search and Arrest; Crime-Scene Search; Crime Prevention; Domestic-Crisis Intervention; Hostage Negotiation; Burglary in Progress; Traffic Stop; White-Collar Crime; and Emergency Field First Aid.

Members of the West Bend Police Explorer Post participated in the Hostage Negotiation; Shoot/Don’t Shoot; Emergency Field First Aid; and Traffic Accident Investigation.  The team of Robert Schotzko, Brandon Zusy, Tim Hall and Joseph Tjader earned 3rd place in the Traffic Accident Investigation event.  The other West Bend team consisted of Jason Onken, John Ballard, Chance Duenkel and Kevin Rollinger.
